For those of you who are new to this, an RC battery is a thing where your RC vehicle gets all its power from. In order to get the maximum performance, you'll need to choose the best battery for the application. Generally speaking, there are many different types of batteries for the application, however, in the RC industry, there are two most popular and proven ones - NiMH and LiPo. Although both of them are considered good, they differentiate from one another for several things. NiMH or also known as nickel-metal hydride are reliable, safe and easy to maintain types of batteries. These types of car remote control battery have smaller voltage increments and its main downside is the size. They are bulky, heavy, and have lower energy density. NiMH batteries represent a round cell that is available in many different forms in order to suit different applications. According to manufacturers, a great number of NiMH batteries that power RC cars are made of multiple SUB-C sized batteries.
LiPo batteries, on the other hand, are known as Lithium-Ion Polymer batteries that have high energy density, flat cell design and high discharge rate. The main downsides of these batteries is that can be dangerous if handled incorrectly. They also require an ESC with LiPo cut--off and require a balance charger. A LiPo car remote control battery that has two or more cells in series has a balanced lead, unlike NiMH batteries which don't require a balance lead. Generally speaking, a LiPo battery cell is flat and it has a rectangle shape and there is no standard physical size for a LiPo cell. Another important thing to note is that a lot of RC cars have been designed to accommodate a 6-cell NiMH battery which is usually 137x45x234mm. However, there are some cars which have a rounded mount which means that they can perfectly fit the 6-cell NiMH battery. From all this it can be concluded that LiPo batteries can vary a lot in both length and height, thus making it easier to use. When it comes to the charging part, NiMH batteries can only charge properly on a charger that is specifically designed only for NiMH batteries. When it comes to charging LiPo batteries, the first thing you need to know is that they should be charged right after the purchase. Then and only then they are ready to be used. Keep in mind the charger to be compatible with your LiPo battery, otherwise, the battery will be charged incorrectly which can lead to failures.
